How to Buy a Sofa
For any renter or homeowner, the sofa is almost always a high involvement purchase, if not the most emotional investment next to the actual home itself. As one of the most central pieces in the house, purchasing sofas has often been the cause of much conflict, but it doesn’t have to be! Here are a few things to consider before making that big purchase.
Make Some Measurements
The first thing you should think about before even considering buying a sofa is, “Do I have space for one in my house?” If the answer is no, you should probably go and clear some things out. If your answer is yes, on the other hand, measure the space that you do have. From there, find a sofa that will fit within those parameters. According to interior designer Mary McDonald, “The perfect sofa is 40" deep, 60" long, and 36" high with a 19" seat height.”
Check For Quality
It’s almost too easy to buy a poorly-made sofa. It’s important to find one that is sturdy and superior to truly stand the test of time, and that may mean sacrificing affordability. After all, it’s true what they say: you get what you pay for.
That said, it’s important you inspect or at least ask about the interior of the sofa, from its frame to its cushion stuffing. Is the frame made of strong wood or flimsy metal? Is it held together by nails or glue and staples? Is the stuffing made of down or polyurethane foam and springs? If you want a reliable sofa, quality is everything.
Looks Matter, Too
Okay, maybe quality isn’t absolutely everything, although it is extremely important—perhaps the most important part of buying a sofa (or at least one that will last for years and years to come). But what’s also important is appearance. After all, you can buy the sturdiest and most well-built sofa on the market, but if it doesn’t aesthetically fit with everything else in your home, then you might as well not have it there in the first place.
Find something that stylistically works and compliments the other pieces. Do you have a minimalistic, sleek home? Try a black leather sofa. Want something more colorful to go with your vibrant living room? Get something with stripes and more texture. When in doubt, though, settle for something neutral.
Aim for Perfection
If you’re going to be paying hundreds, if not thousands of dollars for a sofa, it might as well be the perfect one. This means considering every single thing mentioned above and more—from the minor details to the obvious features. Definitely consider size, quality and appearance; but also think about other things like arm style, the number of cushions, maintenance level and longevity.
