Keep Your Mattress Clean

A good mattress that is properly maintained should last 10–20 years, depending on the quality of the mattress. The following steps should help prolong the life of your mattress.

Dirt and debris can build up on your mattress, lowering its life span. Following the guidelines below will help keep your mattress clean. If you have purchased a Mattress Protection Plan, please contact them before trying to clean up the stain yourself.

Do not eat or drink in bed.
Even though it is tempting at times, do not allow your pets to sleep in bed with you. Pet dander can embed itself in mattresses and stay there forever.
Use a mattress pad and wash it in hot, soapy water at least 3 times a year, or if it becomes stained. It is much easier to treat a stain right away.
Flip or rotate your mattress every 3 months or so to keep it evenly distributed and reduce uneven wear.
- Memory foam and hybrid mattresses should only be rotated from end to end.
- Innerspring mattresses should be rotated from end to end and turned over.
- If individuals sleeping on the mattress vary greatly in weight, it should be flipped or rotated more frequently.
- If the mattress is for a guest bed, it can be flipped or rotated less frequently.
- It is recommended to have another person assist to make the job a bit easier.

Vacuum your mattress regularly with rotators off or using the upholstery attachment.
- Vacuuming will remove dirt, dust, and dander from mattresses and prolong the life of the purchase.
- Be mindful of dirt that has collected on the bottom if you use the base of the vacuum.
- We recommend vacuuming every time you flip or rotate your mattress.
To clean organic liquid spills (urine, vomit, bodily fluids)
- Blot with a clean dry towel. Apply as much pressure as possible without rubbing the spill (rubbing may cause the spill to absorb deeper into the mattress).
- When most of the liquid is removed, clean with a mixture of equal parts vinegar and cold water.
- When the mattress is completely dry, vacuum the entire mattress.
To clean non-organic spills (food, etc.)
- Vacuum any crumbs or debris so they don’t get rubbed into the mattress during the cleaning process.
- Using an upholstery cleaner, lightly spray the mattress.
- Blot the cleaner with a clean, dry towel.
- When most of the moisture is removed, sprinkle baking soda over the area, which will absorb the moisture and eliminate odors.
- Be sure to vacuum the mattress when it dries.
As your mattress ages, it may develop a slight stale smell. To keep your mattress smelling fresh, try the following:
- Spray the mattress with a mixture of equal parts lemon juice and cold water.
- Blot dry with a clean, dry towel.
- When dry, sprinkle baking soda over the mattress.
- Wait 24 hours and vacuum entire mattress.
