Designer Series: Function First, Design Second with @seabrightlane
Meet Donna Holcombe, the creative force behind Seabright Lane Interiors, bringing her passion for design and a wealth of experience from the corporate world into the realm of interior design. After 18+ years in sales and marketing, Donna decided to follow her heart, earning an associate degree in interior design, and gaining hands-on industry experience at Shea Homes' design center.
Approaching projects with a focus on showcasing Mor Furniture's diverse range, Donna aims to create visually appealing yet practical and comfortable spaces for everyday living. Her love for design lies in crafting spaces that narrate the client's story, reflecting their personality and life journey.
Donna's current design fascination centers on textures, especially soft ones, as they add warmth and comfort to any space. At Seabright Lane Interiors, the mantra is "function first, design second," and Donna incorporates this by understanding her clients' needs and lifestyles.
The Plan
To achieve both designs, the following two products were styled using a blend of in-store furniture accents, studio props, and a few of Donna’s own accent decor pieces.
Room #2: Coastal Cozy Warmth
For the bedroom design, Donna draws inspiration from a coastal, cozy warmth for a soothing vibe. The Sullivan Storage Panel Bed, with its tall headboard and extra storage drawers, stand out for its practicality. “The six drawers under the bed create so much extra storage, you could forego a second dresser if you didn’t have adequate space,” according to Donna.
When it came to planning out the room design, Donna took the time to understand the colors, patterns, and a specific theme for the bedroom. For contrast, she added the gray Cagney nightstands, dresser, and Louise Sherpa Chair for a warmer tone. And kept the cozy warmth theme going with the beautiful Sonoma Rug in Ivory and Blue Natural.
Donna's universal advice for those exploring their style is to understand what works by experimenting with smaller design elements gradually. For budget-friendly enhancements, Donna suggests strategic shopping during sales, prioritizing major pieces, and making impactful changes with simple updates like throw pillows or a fresh coat of paint.
While Donna doesn't strictly follow trends, she predicts a rise in blending different styles to create eclectic and personalized looks. When asked what her timeless design hack is: “Less is more,” embrace simplicity and functionality. A clean and uncluttered space tends to endure the test of time.
