Designer Series: Traditional Modern with Leah Rachel Interiors

Traditional interior design is one of the most popular design styles of all time as it continues to be the most effective way to lay out a home. Some may dismiss it as old timey, safe, or bland but what’s so brilliant about the classic look is the way it can easily infuse with other styles transforming traditional rooms into modern spaces.

We were thrilled to welcome Leah Sampson of @leahrachelinteriors for yet another epic #DesignerSeries session last month. Her design to-do list included styling the Rhys Power Sofa and the Meadow Dining both in gray. A wife and a mom to four young children, Leah lives in a small town just outside of San Diego, California. Her passion for interior design started years ago when she and her husband renovated their very own travel trailer whilst sharing the journey on her Instagram account. After much traction, other RV and travel trailer owners caught on and started sliding into Leah’s DMs looking to get advice and inquiries on renovation and design. Her good eye for interior design translated so much that she ended up starting a small business remodeling RV’s and travel trailers. She has since designed and remodeled her 1980’s home and continue to thrive in both her business and personal life.

Upon Leah’s arrival and warm pleasantries in the studio, we quickly learned of Leah’s concept plans on styling both sets which later became a reoccurring theme throughout the shoot – conventional modern design. The look is a range of modern, traditional, rustic, a touch of glam and coastal with the common theme of having mixed style. There’s always been something special about blending traditional and modern styles together. Keep on reading for Leah’s take on conventional and minimalist traditional home design.

The Plan

Leah designs a modern power sofa and a customer-favorite dining set.

The Prep

Style each set by combining in-store furniture accents, studio props, and Leah's own accent decor pieces.

Set #1: Rhys Power Sofa

The Result:

Leah styles the first room with the Rhys Power Sofa in Pewter. A motion sofa with a modern look, easy-to-clean fabric, 2-power reclining mechanism, drop down table, cupholders, and ambient LED lighting for each seat base. The Rhys collection includes a power loveseat, power chair and available in other colors. She went with a clean, minimal approach proving once again that accents make the room. “While touring the Mor Furniture showroom, I saw the beautiful Hopkins chair and Vienna coffee table and was immediately drawn to them,” Leah explains, “I decided to design the space off of these.” The rich dark wood on the coffee table as well as the chair’s arms and legs compliment the light gray sofa creating an easy contrast on the eyes. We love the hints of dark metal in the room with the Makeika Floor Lamp and the Vienna Coffee Table for a simple and sleek design. Soft touches of neutral décor, plants and the Sonoma Rug in Ivory & Blue all combined together complete this minimalist traditional room.

Set #2: Meadow Dining Room

The second look features the Meadow Dining in Gray which includes an extendable table, four chairs and a bench. An all-time customer favorite, the Meadow dining collection has an array of configurable sets built to suit any type of dining and living room space and size. Leah’s inspiration for this room was to design a classic, modern yet moody vibe. “I fell in love with the gray wooden tones when visiting my local Mor Furniture showroom,” she says matter-of-factly, “you can’t really go wrong with a gray dining room.” Leah paired the dining set with the matching Meadow Sideboard Buffet featuring three pull-outs and three easy-open doors perfect for storing plates, serving ware and more. This buffet is also ideal as a standalone piece and can be designed and utilized in any home style. For lighting, Leah added an eye-catching piece with the Sybil Pendant Light which features a 6-light globe light with dark metal rods attached to each globe making it a center piece of its own because “the more drama, the better.” Agreed. To tie the room together she chose the Abington Rug in Gray with its fun diamond geometric pattern and soft-to-the-touch texture. To fill up the wall space behind the dining set is the oversized canvas piece Tayah Wall Art which shows off layers of colors for a visually abstract look.
