L Shaped Couches and Sectionals

An L shaped sectional is the default sectional shape for a reason: it fits into a corner, defines a seating area without needing a second piece, and leaves one side of the room open. Mor Furniture for Less carries L shaped couches in fabric and leather, from apartment-scale two-seat configurations to full six-seat sectionals with a chaise.

Left Facing or Right Facing

The direction is named from where you sit, facing the sofa. A right facing sectional has its long side — the chaise — on your right. Stand in the room looking at the wall where the sofa will go, then decide which side the chaise should extend toward. Getting this wrong is the single most common sectional ordering mistake.

Sizing an L Shaped Couch

Measure both walls of the corner. A standard L shaped sofa runs 95 to 115 inches on the long side and 60 to 75 inches on the short side. Leave 30 to 36 inches of walking space around the open sides, and 18 inches between the seat edge and a coffee table. In rooms under 12 by 12 feet, look for a small L shaped couch under 90 inches.

Configurations

A sofa chaise sectional has a fixed chaise and is the simplest layout. A modular L shaped sectional lets you rearrange or reverse the chaise later. Reclining L shaped sectionals add power or manual recline, and need wall clearance behind the reclining seats. Sleeper versions convert the long side into a bed for guests.

L Shaped Sectional FAQ

How do I know if I need left or right facing?

Face the sofa from inside the room. If the chaise should extend to your right, you need a right facing sectional.

What size room fits an L shaped couch?

A standard L shaped sectional suits rooms 13 by 13 feet and larger. Below that, look for small or apartment-scale models under 90 inches on the long side.

Can an L shaped sectional be reconfigured?

Modular models can. Fixed sofa-chaise models cannot — the chaise side is built in, which is why facing direction matters at the time of order.

What is the difference between an L shaped sofa and a sectional?

An L shaped sofa is a type of sectional. Sectional is the broader term and includes U shaped, modular and curved layouts as well.
